We would like to share an update regarding recent discussions around potential changes to Portugal’s nationality law.  

According to IAS, the Portuguese Constitutional Court has reviewed the proposed amendments and determined that they cannot move forward in their current form as the Constitutional Court ruled on the amendments approved by Parliament earlier this year, identifying multiple grounds of unconstitutionality. As a result, the legislative process has entered a new phase, the proposed changes have been paused and returned to Parliament to be revised. 

At this time, it is important to emphasize that no changes have been made to the existing nationality or residency framework, and that the process is still open ended. All current rules remain fully in force, and there is no immediate impact on ongoing or future applications. Any potential revisions would require additional discussion and approval and are expected to take time. 

For clients and investors, including those considering or holding Golden Visa residency, this outcome is reassuring. Residency rights and nationality timelines continue to be assessed according to the laws in place at the time of each application. There are no new requirements, delays, or restrictions resulting from this review. 

Portugal’s review process is designed to ensure stability and consistency before any major policy changes are introduced. For now, clients can continue to plan with confidence under the existing legal framework, while we remain attentive to any future developments and will provide updates as appropriate.
